Quantitative X-ray Determination of CFRP Micro Structures

چکیده
Beyond imaging the mass distribution of materials by X-ray absorption techniques recent synchrotron and laboratory X-ray refraction techniques provide interface contrast imaging of micro structures. This is of specific relevance to carbon fibre composites (CFRP) which constitute advanced aerospace components. Apart from merely finding isolated flaws like cracks or pores within the natural high interface density only the quantitative measurement of the differences after defined mechanical treatment provides a reliable understanding of the related macroscopic properties. The contribution of the fibre matrix interface of CFRP laminates to the mechanical properties is investigated by relating the mechanical damage to the additional fibre debonding after impact and fatigue. Composites of industrially sized carbon fibres for aerospace applications and of unsized fibres are compared.

The aim of this research is to investigate different X-ray based quantitative phase analysis methods for determination of cristobalite phase content in ceramic cores. For this purpose, four popular routes including peak absolute intensity method, relative intensity ratio method, direct or calibration method and internal standard (or Alexander-Klug) method have been chosen. Some control samples ...
متن کاملPorosity characterization of CFRP parts by ultrasonic and X-ray tomographic non-destructive methods
Porosity is a result of a deficiency in the production process that could lead into the mechanical degradation of CFRP composite structures. Therefore, some checkpoints for determining its presence during part manufacturing have to be established, verifying that precise threshold values are not exceeded. Currently, porosity characterization is carried out by an indirect way using ultrasonic tec...

In this work a novel method for the characterization of porosity in carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) is presented. A visualization pipeline for the interactive exploration and visual analysis of CFRP specimens is developed to enhance the evaluation workflow for non-destructive testing (NDT) practitioners based on specified tasks. Besides quantitative porosity determination and the calcul...
